song of the day:
boyz ii men - water runs dry
we don't even talk anymore,
and we don't even know what we argue about. . .
- nooooo - a double post!!! that's what i get for neglecting to post. . .at least i'm keeping up my karma by blogging daily. =P i'll keep today short tho: so basically, i woke up and realized it was saturday morning; that's right, everyone, my penchant for yu-gi-oh has returned in full swing. =.= lovely.
- after that, i just hung around and played with my cousins (the ones who came last night from san luis obispo). the girl, ria, is 10, and the little boy, sohum, is 3. in any case, they're a lot of fun, especially since ria and i have been close for a long time (remember, my brother's been anywhere BUT california for ages), and so we just did random stuff. sometime in the afternoon, my cousins left again (that's right: they stayed for a half day. hardly seems worth the effort, i know, but my aunt and i actually had a long, nice chat about colleges [what ELSE do we talk about?] and she gave me her endorsement for stanford. interesting).
- just then, though, my mom decided to make me escort her to one of her patient's weddings. why? well, firstly, because my dad was too lazy/sleepy (okay, i'll give him the benefit of the doubt, his sleep pattern's been screwed over by night duty) and my brother was just plain lazy (no excuses there). better question: why was my mom going to a patient's wedding? simple explanation:
oh babu, we must go; she's my patient, her mom's my patient, her sister's my patient, her brother-in-law's my patient. . .
- ah. should have thought of that. the wedding itself was pretty nice, although a TAD too christian for me. don't get me wrong at all: i'm not anti-religious in any way, just that the incessant "amen"'s after virtually every comment made by any speaker got a little annoying. i later realized that most of the people in attendance were deeply religious, and the bride was actually one of the most devoted members of the church. i was amazed by how much respect everyone, especially the pastor, gave her. speaking of the pastor, this guy was the coolest pastor i have ever seen: he SANG SONGS during the wedding, on his guitar and with some accompaniment from other musicians. they were all praise songs, but his voice was definitely first-class and the songs weren't slow or boring by any means. a cool experience.
oh, btw, one of the bridesmaids fainted.
- just thought you'd like to know. when my mom and i got home, i "found out" that she had secretly planned a family portrait - unfortunately, neither my brother nor my dad knew of this, and she went HYPER on their butts trying to make them hurry and dress quickly. luckily, since i wore a suit to the wedding, i just sat on my big butt and smirked. the portrait went pretty well, although my brother didn't have a blazer, so i had to go without mine so we looked somewhat alike. also annoying; i KEPT BLINKING during the shoot, so the photographer had to retake a few times. =.= oh well. . .right afterwards, my brother and i cruised off to irvine, where we had the most interesting conversation about girls that we've ever had. you see, we don't usually talk about that kind of thing, but in this case it got quite interesting. essentially, two different girls liked him a lot, and so he didn't know who to choose - the sad part is, the one both he and i leaned toward was largely because she was a bengali girl (an unfair advantage to the other girl, but i suppose some things can't be helped).
- i'll definitely elaborate some time, but i'll have to respect my bro's privacy too. anyways, once i got home, i just chatted my night away. . .that, and resumed my terrible, terrible addiction to championship manager. *ugh* curse my soccer addiction.

song of the day:
smilez and southstar - tell me
my friends were your friends,
your friends were my friends,
your dough was my dough,
my dough is my dough. . .
- ahahahaha. to put that into context, the song's about a *cough* bitter breakup, but the song itself is pretty cool. in fact, smilez is asian xD, although he grew up in chicago, so he spares us any fob-bish accent. in any case, i got this song from my brother, and like a sign from the gods the radio stations started playing it a few days later. *wow* btw, you'll notice it's saturday morning as i post this, my apologies once again as i crashed for the second consecutive night. . .
- but let's start from the beginning, shall we? woke up rather early, around 7:30, not by will but rather through necessity (this is freaky, but my body refuses to get more than 8 hours of sleep), so i headed over to my computer and worked on a myriad of random things. for example, i did a little repair work on the network with my dad's laptop, then i reinstalled office xp on his machine and uninstalled a bunch of junk that ended up freeing almost a gig. T_T then i did some exploravision stuff and finished my biomed engineering homework before i looked at the clock. . .and realized it was already 12:30. how did that happen?
then, like an angel out of the sky, my brother plopped onto my porch and came crashing through the door, wielding. . .a pizza.
- LUNCH! (incidentally, why do i keep using religious images whenever i refer to my brother?) it was at this time that i finally realized i had my harvard interview at 5:15. . .and wasn't even remotely prepared. problem was, i had breakdance at 2, so i couldn't possibly come dressed formally to class, but where would i find time afterwards (remember, class till 5) to CHANGE?!?! dear god. with chaos in full swing, i flew into the shower (for the second time), and then proceeded to cause carnage on my defenseless face with a razor. by the time i was through, i must have had enough nicks to try out for the next installment of hannibal. . .
- no time to fantasize, indian boy!! i got to class quite late (not that anyone cares), where i learned some pretty sweet variations on the six-step, and so i banged my head on the floor a few times (my memory from this point on is quite fuzzy X_x;;) as i attempted to emulate the masterful teacher dude (or even si hyun and pat, for that matter). out of breath (and out of neurons), the punishment continued in differential equations - i somehow managed to pay attention and take notes while filling out the rest of my pre-interview form. in the meantime, rui looked on with a superior air of amusement. . .or perhaps not, as he frantically tried to figure out why we got different answers on biomed homework. ah well, by the time we actually got to class, everything seemed to work out okay, and professor putnam let me out 20 minutes early (granted, in college students basically do whatever they want, but he could have gotten mad or something).
- the extra time was adequate to throw some nice clothes on (as it turned out, i found myself in a full-fledged blazer), and before long i was:
classy neil. *tilts chin up*
- remind me to bring my monocle next time. my dad drove me over to the place, which turned out to be a 20-story office building - in fact, my interview was a HARVARD lawyer (well duh neil, it's a harvard interview) who worked at firm. the interview turned out surprisingly well, and we chatted for a while about mun and then about indian authors (no, the guy was white all right, but extremely well read), and then of course i just HAD to ask him about the perks of being a harvard lawyer. the guy's amazing: he was a firm partner for 16 years before the firm finally dissolved, but of course, being a harvard man, he just found himself another big-name firm to be a partner at. i walked out two hours later starry-eyed, completely intimidated by his illustrious career, but the stars were just starting to fly. . .
- because the second i got home i found out i was supposed to take anya and kunal to jay's house for a dvd party. there's just one teensy weensy little problem. remember that "angel out of the sky" from earlier?
HE TOOK MY CAR!!!!! >O
- evil epitomized!! to make matters worse, my dad was about to leave for apple valley (which is precisely where i'm posting from) because we were going to take a family picture on saturday. so after much debate and argument (my dad could have taken anya and kunal to jay's house, but since my bro was taking me to apple valley later, they wouldn't have had a ride home), we had to call the whole thing off and so i just decided to run off with my dad. in the car, we actually had an interesting chat about college, and for the first time in recorded history, my dad actually was lenient on my choice of college - it was a miracle from the heavens. (dear god, i really must stop that) apparently though, i eventually got over it, seeing as i passed out somewhere along the road and woke up in apple valley. even a quick dinner wasn't enough to keep me up, and i collapsed all over again way before my brother OR my cousins (from san luis obispo) got home. . .
- and there you have it. a rather short day if you ask me: either that, or i simply can't remember what else i did (i have to stop practicing break on hard surfaces). =P ah well, tomorrow is another day. THE DAY IS MINE, TREBEK!
for the uninitiated, that last bit of stupidity is from celebrity jeopardy. blame jenga.

song of the day:
nelly - air force ones
what's my basis? the look up 'sto on his faces,
this kid's outrageous - he's buying them by the cases,
cuz once i pop 'em, got 'em, and switch the laces,
they all purpose - ya heard me, kinda like my datin. . .
- ah yes. the song about shoes. who can resist? last day of finals - i tried to muster the spirit to study for spanish in the morning, but i ended up preferring (as usual) to sleep in. plus, being the completely lethargic lump of putty that i am, i didn't even bother to wrap shiyue's overdue birthday gift last night so i did it in the morning. on the way to class, i dropped into chem to leave a friendly message to ferazzi's 3rd period ap chem:
good luck to everyone. except bob.
- hey, i'm sure anya, kaidi, paul, and co. felt the love. onwards to spanish then, to fail the final i didn't study one iota for. in fact, i returned the story book that we used all year last friday, so i hadn't even SEEN the stories for a week. oh well. =P the final was surprisingly short, so there was around half an hour at the end, during which i found myself engrossed with dahlia and brian's origami war. actually, more like brian's origami war - he made two dinosaurs (origami dinosaurs!! phatness) and a random crane, which i think was being eaten by the dinosaur. or something. all the while, some hamtaro-like character from some random anime was being attacked (NOT origami, mind you), and. . .ok i'll stop now.
- FINALS OVER!!! w00t. i fled to jelnick, where i waited for shiyue to come out of his english final before *finally* giving the liverpool jersey that i had gotten for him from thailand. turns out he had something for me too: 1000 free hours of aol. O_o;;; actually, it was just the case, which contained: *drumroll* FIFA 2003! mwahahaha. what else could i expect from soccermania himself. i headed home with anya and jessica (thompson, don't ask where we found her but i didn't mind xP) to grab my car, and i dumped them off at albertson's for no apparent reason (HA! i started the fad.) while i drove down to UCI, where i finally got to see jeNn for the first time in a month. . .
- scary stuff: her humanities class had 400 people in it, so i had to weather a hurricane of bodies just to get in. T_T jeNn, her friend sarah (super nice!) and i ended up grabbing some lunch at the food court, where i ran into my brother's college roommate's younger brother. yikes that's confusing. actually, he stayed at our house during my 9th grade year, just until he could find another place to stay, so we know each other pretty well. what shiyue is to soccer, this guy is to tennis - so we ended up rambling on about rainer schuettler and the resurgent andre agassi and and and. . .i finally realized i had partially ditched jeNn, so i took his leave and scurried back to their table. once sarah left for her class, the two of us got rather bored and went back to my car, where i decided that we'd go for a drive.
a drive to HELL!!!!!!!
- okay, so maybe not. actually, we ended up going nowhere at all, as i drove down to ridgeline + turtle rock only to take a u-turn just so i could speed down the hill. ahh, lame am i. i tried to crash anya's house, but the poor girl was sleeping, so i exasperatedly drove back to uci. there, i ran into my second "old friend" of the day, satoshi from my math classes in 10th and 11th. and to finish it all off, i spent the last half and hour or so until jeNn's class looking for her friend jerry, who decided to never show up - his main intrigue is his ability to do rubik's cubes in minutes. i take hours. X_x;;
- when all was said and done, it was 3:30. . .chalk up FIVE HOURS with jeNn. and yet it still went by in a flash. i headed over to my diff eq discussion, and after class rui decided to hit the ARC, where we found ourselves playing badminton for a few hours. i'd almost forgotten how fun it was. =D at this point, i still hadn't been home since morning, and the streak continued as rui and i dropped by school to vainly attempt to check our stats grades. it was pitch black and what dim light we had was barely enough to prevent us from walking INTO the portables - i'm pretty sure i saw two D's, but rui claims otherwise. >.>
so i FINALLY went home.
err, to rui's home.
- THIS time, we went with the intention of getting a start on our website for exploravision, this toshiba scholarship thing. we settled on quantum teleportation (star trek, anyone? xD) before i realized that, unlike my weird indian self, rui eats dinner at 7. . .so i found myself munching on rice and beans while watching jeopardy. lovely. and just when i thought i'd be a nice guest and not leave TOO late, rui got another brilliant idea and decided that we'd go (along with his friend kevin) to woodbridge to play basketball. ahh, wasn't THAT fun. half the time, i was guarding this 6' 2" korean who smoked - and found MYSELF getting smoked. =.=;; all in all, i wearily got home at 10:30, where i was simply too tired to make myself any more dinner or even blog. translation: lights out, real fast.
- and there you have it, another needlessly descriptive uneventful day in the life of one mr. biswas. completely stressless, with a total elapsed time of two hours that i was actually home and awake. if you think about it, from 12 am to 12 am, only being at home (and conscious) for 120 minutes is mighty sad. but hey, when there's no one at home and friends abound outside, such are your tendencies. overall, a VERY good day. =)

miércoles, enero 22, 2003:
song of the day:
craig david - hidden agenda
what you see is what you get,
no hidden agenda. . .
and. . .i have returned.
- so where exactly HAVE i been? i suppose i could use finals an excuse, but seeing as i haven't posted in TWO weeks (and also seeing that i still have another final tomorrow), it's prolly just a bad excuse. to be honest, i've just been really lazy, but with my lack of motivation has come a sharp lack in karma, particularly obvious in an issue i ran into yesterday. basically i got into a bit of discussion with a friend who i thought was bordering on "buttering-up", and the worst part was that i was hoping our friendship was just on the mend, too. . .luckily, the whole thing sorted out okay and hopefully everything works out. anywho, as they say, that was so yesterday.
- on to today! so my finals apathy continues - woke up at 5:45 in a vain attempt to appear studious, but succumed to my own indolence and went back to bed, only to wake up again (to my second alarm) at 6:15. which ALSO failed to completely disrupt my slumber, and so i bulldozed on (get it? dozed. . .bulldozed. . .okay, just a bad attempt at a pun) until 6:30, where i finally found the energy to fly out of bed and into the shower door. literally. i didn't have my glasses on, and so naturally i thought the shower down was open. BAM! guess not.
- by the time i actually came to my senses (and achieved a level of hygiene appropriate enough to emerge from the bathroom), i started to frantically study for my ap poli sci final, which i technically should have LAST night. in any case, i stupidly forgot to eat breakfast entirely as i flew out the door, review sheet in hand, desperately trying to cram my brain with any last useless facts about bureaucracy and judges. and who did i run into on the way to school but RUI, who decided to arrive to school incredibly late today. inexplicably, i decided to sit down in his car (remember everyone, i live NEXT door to school, it's faster for me to walk there than to drive) and move at a snail's pace for the next three minutes as he desperately sought a parking space.
we ended up parking on a bump. literally. on a speed bump.
- as a result, i strolled into poli sci fashionably late. . .and fashionably unnoticed. everyone was up and talking, no one was sitting down or anything - you have to realize, the two finals i had before that were english and stats, and in both cases there wasn't a WORD after people crossed the threshold of doom. as it turned out, miss jacobsen gave us FORTY-FIVE minutes to study for the final. *score!* a quick word about miss j tho: perhaps it was the fact that this was the last day of class i'd have with her, but i finally came to the realization today that she really does try very hard to find the balance between teaching and fun - i know not everyone appreciates her efforts, but imho she's the type of teacher uni's lucky to have. anyways, final ended up being pretty doable, plus i had half an hour afterwards to study for physics. *score!* actually, most of the time i was babbling with scott, matt, bui, and kunal about the most random things: in particular, the completely random and pointless shows that fox insists on showing. you know, like man vs. beast or bridezilla! and who can forget the classic joe millionaire. . .add in american idol, and fox has a show for just about every freak in america.
- snack was a nice enigma trying to find out exactly where anya was so i could give her the christmas gift i've owed her since. . .well, december 25, i suppose. it was a lord of the rings dvd, but the great irony of it all is that her parents took the dvd player with them when they went to davis. . .
but forgot to take anya with them!
- actually, tho, that's a good thing. btw, does this whole ironically useless gift thing remind you of "gift of the magi" or what? interesting. at the end of snack, i headed over to malin to take the final of doom - i call it this because the averages from the first two classes were 26 and 27. . .out of 50. X_x;;; lovely. funny story tho: i lent bui my scientific calculator the week we got back from break, and didn't get it back until the poli sci final today. PERFECT TIMING. the second i stepped into malin, i realized i would have been dreadfully screwed without it (malin doesn't allow graphing calculators, if you were wondering). more interesting observations: malin, before starting the final, went around and inspected EVERYONE'S calculator, their cases, and even behind those little instruction sheets that they usually embed into the cases. talk about suspicious. anyways, final went okay (or so i thought), and by the time class ended, i felt pretty confident.
- a series of random run-ins with aditya, julia, and parsa (that crazy persian soph =D) marked my schoolend time, and afterwards i headed to in 'n' out with rui. and guess what?
i'm broke.
- yup. didn't even have two bucks to buy myself a grilled cheese sandwich (which is, of course, the only sandwich i could ever order from the widely diverse four-item menu). rui spotted me tho, and the first thing i did when i got home was mooch money from my sleepless dad. got a bit of a surprise tho, in realizing that my brother wasn't home. that's right, i haven't blogged in so long that i haven't mentioned my brother's arrival from pennsylvania last wednesday. he'll be here until the 31st, which is awesome because i've missed him a ton over the last. . .oh FIVE MONTHS. . .and so i'm just generally glad to have him around again. as it was, he headed down to apple valley, so once again i found myself alone for the night - but more on that later.
- clock strikes three, off to diff eq with me. nothing of note here, altho rui told me later that the professor, before class, had sat down next to him and starting talking to him in mandarin. isn't that lovely. after that, i had to hit administration real quick to add diff eq "officially" before running off to biomed, where i made a horribly shocking realization.
the professor knows my name! AHHHHHHHH.
- actually, come to think of it, that's pretty humbling - and pretty cool. our professor's really nice, and he actually makes an effort to get to know people, so the class ends up being a lot of fun. rui made more history during the class, actually answering a bio question correctly. armageddon is coming, hell has frozen over, you might actually have a chance with that one girl. (damn, i'm evil) ran home afterwards, and of course i found NO ONE at home, so i gave myself some wonderful company through the magic of AIM, whereby i ate up the next hour and a half or so. actually, i took a badly needed nap in between and threw in some review for my spanish final, but in any case i realized how LITTLE food we had in the apartment some time around 7:30 and so i got this weird urge to fly off to albertson's. interesting, i ran into julius there and eventually spent an insane 50 minutes there, and all i brought back were muffins, oj, bread, and chips. sheesh, i'm inefficient. even worse, the sink smelled terrible and so i had to empty it out, then after finishing dinner, i had to do them ALL over again:
don't ask how, but after eating dinner myself, i had 3 bowls, 2 containers, 3 spoons, and a plate to wash. T_T
- like i said in my away msg, the perquisites of living alone aren't quite as glamorous as i thought they would be. anyways, rest of my night has been more lovely chatting until i finally got the inspiration to write another novel. . .err blog entry. actually i have a few people to thank for that, particularly jeNn, dolli, kaidi, and puja, who convinced me that people not named neil read my blog. xP then again, the point of my blog really isn't to be public, but i wonder how often i'd post if i didn't get reminded. *wink*
- final notes for the nite. . .some tidbits from CNNcom: r. kelly got charged with child porn (brings back haunting memories of mr. fair), al-Qaeda might be turning to assassination now (maybe a better thing, one person at a time instead of 1,000 *sigh*), and it's official: the toothbrush has beaten out the car, television, computer, and cell phone as the quintessential invention. i, of course, disagree, since i've brushed with my fingers before (don't ask). some awesome sports games today too, with an insane 5 hour marathon between andy roddick and younes el aynaoui, plus some serious college bball upsets. my point in listing all these? perhaps today, more than other days, the world seems to have turned upside-down. just an observation, perhaps, but i tend to believe change comes in spurts. just a philosophical point from my perspective. in any case, tomorrow seems to be a rather packed day - i actually get to see jeNn for the first time in who-knows-how-long, and i finally get a chance to dump off the other christmas gift that i've been holding on to for way too long (amn't i a TERRIBLE friend???). if my motivation persists, i should be able to throw up another exceeding long blog entry, so accept my apologies ahead of time. xD i'll leave you with a quote from my brother, who commented on this indian model that he was randomly hooked up with:
it was like talking to a vacuum.
